BREEAM
Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for commercial buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the industry measure used to describe a building’s environmental performance.
The 2008 Budget set out the Government’s aim that all new non-domestic buildings should be zero carbon from 2019. BREEAM can help developers and their professional advisors achieve this goal.
Key Benefits
A BREEAM Assessment, carried out by CSR Sustain, provides property owners, developers, designers and others with:
Market recognition for low environmental impact buildings
Assurance that best environmental practice is incorporated into a building
Inspiration to find innovative solutions that minimise the environmental impact
A benchmark that is higher than the regulation
A tool to help reduce running costs, improve working and living environments
A standard that demonstrates progress towards corporate and organizational environmental objectives
An CSR Sustain Assessor should be involved in a project as early as possible in order to maximise the benefits of BREEAM. As the majority of BREEAM schemes include a design stage assessment it is important to implement details into the design as early as possible. By doing this it will be easier to obtain a higher rating and a more cost effective result.
A BREEAM Assessment
A BREEAM assessment addresses wide-ranging environmental and sustainability issues and enables developers and designers to prove the environmental credentials of their buildings to planners and clients. It sets and maintains a robust technical standard with rigorous quality assurance and certification.- It has a positive influence on the design, construction and management of buildings
- It uses a straightforward scoring system that is transparent, easy to understand and supported by evidence-based research, providing an overall score which will fall within a band providing a rating of either PASS, GOOD, VERY GOOD, EXCELLENT or OUTSTANDING
Environmental assessments for non-domestic buildings fall under the following categories:
- Industrial
- Education
- Health Care
